Aurora to Host 2008 GreenTown Conference

Last year, over 300 mayors, managers and municipal staff and private sector leaders convened at the Unity Temple in Oak Park, Illinois for the inaugural conference GreenTown: The Future of Community, co-produced by a5 Inc. and Seven Generations Ahead and hosted by the Village of Oak Park. William McDonough, green architect, visionary, author of Cradle to Cradle and Times Magazine “Hero of the Planet”, provided the inspiring inaugural keynote address, and set the stage for a day of learning about comprehensive sustainable city initiatives, municipal best practices and public-private sector leading edge green projects.

This year Illinois’ second largest city, Aurora, will host GreenTown on October 2, 2008 at the historic Paramount Theatre. Mayor Tom Weisner and staff are eager to make this year’s event a showcase for Aurora’s Riverfront Vision initiative, which has incorporated sustainability at its core and is positioning itself to be a model for riverfront and brownfield redevelopment. This year’s GreenTown will also feature other riverfront and brownfield development projects, along with comprehensive, multi-stakeholder green city initiatives, public-private solar homes developments, municipal composting programs, and healthy city initiatives that blend the sustainable built environment with healthy eating and active living strategies, and more.
