Market Basket
The Market Basket Program provides school families with weekly, school-based deliveries of 10-15 varieties of affordable, sustainable, and to the extent possible locally raised fresh fruits and vegetables from the Rainbow Farmers’ Cooperative. Market Basket is operated by Growing Power.
Farm City Market Basket is primarily a food security program, designed to make whole good, fresh veggies, and healthy cooking and eating available to the urban consumer who may have limited access to these things. The basket consists of 10-15 different varieties of veggies in quantities intended to last 2-4 people throughout the week.
During the Spring, Summer, and Fall, most of the produce comes from our co-op; during the off-season we supplement through a small-scale, family owned, local wholesaler pf conventional produce. Through this relationship we strive to support small, local farms, businesses, and relationships during the winter months.
Sustainable Box is also a food security program designed to make sustainably grown, organic produce available at an affordable price to a variety of urban communities who may or may not have been exposed to this kind of food before. This basket also consists of 10-15 different varieties geared towards a family of 2-4.
During the spring, summer, and fall, all of the produce comes from our co-op; during the off-season we supplement this program through a certified organic, small-scale, family owned wholesaler on the south side of Chicago. Through this relationship we are supporting one of our local partners and a necessary national alternative source of organic produce for all kinds of consumers.
Seven Generations Ahead’s Fresh from the Farm program provides education and market linking services that connect local school communities directly with Growing Power’s Market Basket Program. School parent organizations can choose to slightly “mark up” the baskets as a local school fundraiser, and are encouraged to earmark those funds for nutrition and healthy eating programs at their schools.
SGA trains parent volunteers to recruit members, coordinate Market Basket orders, handle on-site distribution, and promote the Market Basket Program. SGA will set up meetings, conduct presentations to Parent-Teacher Organizations and Local School Councils, develop sales and marketing materials for use by schools, and organize promotional events for each school.
