Sustainable Agriculture

An Introduction

Across the country, school and community leaders are joining the Farm to School movement as they realize the health and local economic benefits of providing children access to fresh, nutritious food.  Farm to School programs combine locally grown food procurement for school meal programs with educational activities that teach children about healthy eating and connect them to the growing of food. Farm to School programs address our nation’s childhood obesity and diabetes epidemics, while keeping dollars in the local economy through supporting local farmers.  Farm to School programs also reduce food travel and related CO2 emissions while they support the development of lifelong habits among children of eating fresh fruits and vegetables. 


Fresh from the Farm Educational Program Components

Children who learn to understand and appreciate the source and nature of their food are laying the foundation for a healthier tomorrow. This quiet but powerful concept is at the core of Fresh from the Farm, an educational program of Seven Generations Ahead which is on a mission to grow a culture of healthy eating and environmental awareness among children.  SGA has been at the forefront of the Farm to School movement, and is equipped to support your school and district with Farm to School programming. 

Using a fun, and hands-on approach to learning, Fresh from the Farm threads together ecology, healthy eating, organics, and local farming through year-round curriculum lessons and activities.  Activities include: 

– local organic farm tours that engage children in hands-on farm activities while teaching them how farmers grow food and protect the natural environment.

– classroom food tastings and curriculum lessons that introduce children to varieties of fresh fruits and vegetables, their nutritional value, cultural uses, and cultivation methods.

– organic school gardens that engage children in growing food, provide a new context for eating healthy food, and offer a living classroom of nature’s life cycles.

– farmer visits to classrooms that teach children about the farmer’s life, connect kids to farmers who grow their food, and nurture respect for growing and eating healthy food.

– chef cooking demonstrations that teach children how to make simple recipes that incorporate healthy and local farm food while developing an appreciation for food and the art of cooking.

– parent education that informs parents about healthy eating choices and makes the link between academic success, physical well-being, and eating habits at home.

– school-based composting that completes the natural cycle of growing food, eating food, and converting waste into fertilizer for new food while creating a hands-on learning model for other eco-effective, school-based practices.
